Smileys
by Tuncer Deniz
If you’re a newcomer to modems, electronic mail, and on-line chat, you might think people are talking a weird language. What is all this gibberish? Expressions like BTW, ;-), and <g> are used to convey a tone of voice, facial expression, or gesture. It comes in handy when you don’t want to offend someone, or let them know you are just kidding. For example, by saying, “You idiot,” that expression might be taken seriously by someone when you actually mean it to be a sarcastic remark. By using a ;-) or <g> instead at the end, you are telling the other person that your remark is just poking fun at him/her.
You can also capitalize your words to give them more emphasis. For example, you might say something like, “What, are you KIDDING?.” But beware, using capitalized words repetitively is considered shouting.
Here are some of the more common smileys I’ve come across and that people have told me about. See you on-line :-).
